Abstract

Background: Poverty and inequality have been a constant challenge in Nepal. There has been some reduction in poverty level in Nepal following decades of planned economic growth. This study investigates structural scope of poverty and inequality in Nepal taking into consideration social, geographical, political and gender barriers.

Methods: This paper embodies review-based conceptual research drawing entirely from secondar data such as government reports, journal articles and INGO documents. The study analyses trends in poverty, economic and geographical disparities, gender inequalities and socioeconomic impacts. The study points out the structural and multidimensional nature of poverty and inequality in Nepal.

Results: Lack of access to education, economic opportunities and political representation are major challenges faced by disadvantaged and poor communities in Nepal across mountains, hills and terai. Poverty has been reduced to some extend by the migration and remittances.

Conclusion: The study further concludes that issues of poverty and inequality in Nepal can be overcome through effective and integrated approach to equitable development through promoting economic opportunities, education and better healthcare.

Novelty: This paper contributes to the broader knowledge of poverty and inequality by bringing issues within a single analytical framework and highlights structural inequalities as the main obstacle. The study calls for further research on this area by identifying gaps in secondary data.
