Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the grammatical cohesion skills of undergraduate students. Cohesion plays an important role in organizing sentences into a logical and meaningful sequence and creating a well-structured text. The main objective of this study is to examine the level of students' understanding of grammatical cohesion. For this study, 200 students were selected through simple random sampling from a population of 643 second-year undergraduate students studying in the Faculty of Education at four campuses in the Kathmandu Valley, including two constituent campuses and two community campuses. The study followed a quantitative research design. Primary data were collected through a structured questionnaire based on a Likert scale and analyzed using statistical methods. The findings show that 80 percent of the students have a positive understanding of cohesion and a high level of theoretical knowledge about it. The students were found to be highly competent in using grammatical cohesion, particularly in the use of reference and conjunction. However, their performance in ellipsis and substitution, which are more subtle and technical aspects of grammatical cohesion, was comparatively weaker. This may be mainly because students have had continuous practice with these aspects since the school level. The findings also suggest that Nepali language teaching has not yet moved beyond traditional sentence-level grammar to a sufficient extent. As a result, students appear to face difficulties in using cohesion effectively in creative and academic writing. Therefore, it is necessary to give greater priority to the findings of modern linguistics and incorporate them into the curriculum and teaching-learning process. This can help students make their academic writing more coherent, logical and effective.
