Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a growing public health crisis in Nepal, requiring an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. The use of digital technology including artificial intelligence (AI), social media, and multimedia education tools is becoming increasingly important in both urban and rural settings.
Methods: A narrative review and synthesis of recent evidence was conducted using PubMed, HINARI, and national databases to assess current strategies and the role of AI and mass education in diabetes management in Nepal.
Results: Innovative strategies such as AI-based predictive screening tools, mobile health (mHealth), and educational campaigns using video/audio lectures have been piloted in urban areas with encouraging outcomes. Community-based lifestyle interventions, supported by digital platforms and in person counseling, showed significant benefit in glycemic control and smoking cessation. Screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and prediabetes using digital tools remains underutilized but highly promising.
Conclusion: A multidisciplinary strategy integrating AI-driven tools, social platforms, and community level interventions holds immense potential in controlling the diabetes epidemic in Nepal. Policy-level support and public-private partnerships are vital to scale innovations.
