Collaborative Language Learning Practices of Teachers in ELT Classroom

This study aims to explore the collaborative language teaching practices of English teachers in ELT classrooms in Nepal. Applying the theoretical framework of social constructivism, I used narrative inquiry to explore my participants’ stories regarding their practices of collaborative teaching in English classrooms. Two secondary-level English teachers from two community schools in Rupandehi district were purposively selected. I interviewed them using a semi-structured interview to elicit relevant information. This study reveals that the teacher participants felt positive toward collaborative practices to construct new knowledge, bring a solution to problems and make learning successful. The study also reveals that English teachers and learners working together sharing and exchanging ideas develop mutual trust and respect for each other. In addition, it helps establish a social atmosphere conducive to meaningful learning and to solving students’ problems.

Academic Writing and Politics

Writers challenge the governing traditions and values, beliefs, and interests, so they can take a stand against injustice. Academic writing plays a vital role in the discursive construction and maintenance of the hegemony of the dominant class. The paper purposed to explore the link between academic writing and politics. Thus, we explore how academic writing empowers authors to influence various aspects of their lives using library research method in this paper. Applying Gramsci’s social theory, we discuss the relationship between academic writing and politics under four themes: writing in the global context, politics of academic language, writing and ideology, and the power of writing. The findings suggest that academic writing is connected with power, politics, and ideologies to influence and control others through intellectual and moral unity along with the accord of economic and political power. This paper also concludes that academic writing enhances people to organize the multitude of social beliefs about good or bad, or acceptable or unacceptable for them to bring change in their lives.

Professional Development Strategies in the Narrative of Nepali Teacher

This paper explored the stories of four Nepali secondary level English teachers adopting strategies for their professional development under the guidance of narrative inquiry along with interview as data collection tools. Their sharing was taken as the core information for the study. Findings suggest that teachers update their knowledge in order to be familiar with new trends of English language teaching from workshop, seminar, action research, teachers’ support group and conferences. Apart from these, online courses have also given an ample opportunity to foster professionalism. Teachers impart their knowledge in classroom with students and they develop their professionalism.

An Evaluation of One-year B.Ed. Program of Tribhuvan University

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the significance of the one-year B.Ed. course using Stufflebeam’s CIPP evaluation model (1983).This study focused on the thorough evaluation of the courses of one-year B.Ed. program launched by Tribhuvan University, Nepal. The courses were examined and evaluated from the perspective of the teachers who taught at one-year B.Ed. program and the students who completed the one-year B.Ed. The finding was that despite it is useful for the students who have planned to build up their career in teaching, the evaluation and assessment process were not effective. Four participants were selected to collect the data. They were two lecturers who taught at one-year B.Ed. Program at a constitutional campus of Tribhuvan University of Rupandehi District, Lumbini Province, Nepal and two students who studied and completed this program from the same campus. Data were collected through the interview based on the interview guidelines prepared on the basis of the CIPP evaluation checklist. This study is delimited to the courses offered to the students pursuing specializing English Language in one - year B.Ed. program.

Perception of Teachers about the Role of Parents in Developing Reading Habit of Basic Level Students

This study aimed to explore teachers’ perceptions about the role of parents in developing the reading habit of children to improve academic performance. In this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews were used for data collection, which enabled me in capturing qualitative experiences, opinions, beliefs, and perceptions of purposefully selected participants. The participants were three basic level English teachers from Rupandehi district, Lumbini Province, Nepal. Social constructivism of Vygotsky (1978) has been used as a theory in this study. The data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. The study confirmed that parents’ involvement is crucial in developing children’s reading habits. The parents’ continuous support in reading further enhances the academic performance of the children. The study helped me understand how children’s reading habits enable them to learn English from childhood, which thrives for further educational enhancement. It particularly appeals to and makes parents aware of their influential role in helping children begin reading habits at home.

Self- Realization and Society in Gandhi’s Hind Swaraj (1909)

This paper tries to explore the role of self-realization as one of the primal solutions to psycho- socio-economic and political problems facing the individual, community, nation, and the world with reference to Mahatma Gandhi’s “Hind Swaraj”. Gandhi’s philosophy appears most clearly enunciated in Hind Swaraj (1909), a book written during his days in South Africa. The study investigates the issue of why the speaker gives more priority to self-realization while criticizing modern society as a major hindrance to free individuals, community, nation, and the world. The researcher argues that the speaker in this text wants to see his human world free from all kinds of socio-economic, political, and religious problems. The research approach adopted in this paper includes the opinions, and findings drawn from different research scholars and critiques. The conclusion drawn from this study is that self-realization should be seen as the main dimension of self-connectedness, authenticity, and the ability to realize and express ourselves through our work and thoughts.

Voice of the Margin in Literature: Reading Arundhati Roy's The Ministry of Utmost Happiness

The humiliation made on different people in the society by the upper class people has been depicted in the novel. Roy has presented the discrimination faced by the different people in a subtle way. The injustice over the Hindu people in India and the marginalized Muslim and the conflict among them has been portrayed artistically. The novel presents the dark side of an Indian society in the modern history. She upholds the rights of voiceless people and attempts to raise their voice which could be heard around the globe.

Impact of Socio-Economic Changes on Economically Weak Children in English Language Teaching

Children in schools are behaved on the basis of culture and economic status in which they are grown up. With the aim of exploring the impact of socio-cultural and economic aspects in schools on economically weak children in classroom teaching learning activities this study has been conducted based on the desktop study. This research designed title as Impact of Socio-Economic Changes on Economically Weak Children in English Language Teaching and collected data from the existing literature which are analyzed and reached in the conclusion that children from strong economic status and high cultural background will have better performance than the children who are from poor economic and low cultural background. Development of new technologies, social media highly help to mix up and transfer the culture as a result the direct impact of it is directly seen in the classroom. Change not only brings negative feelings it also tends to bring positive feelings. The change has challenged us (English language teachers) today so that to overcome this challenge we need to apply a balanced approach in the classroom so that we will be away from being boring teachers.

A Study of Sexism in Kate Chopin’s ‘The Story of An Hour’

This paper makes an attempt to explore sexism subtly knitted in Kate Chopin’s The Story of An Hour by applying post-feminist perspectives which not only raises voice against women’s subjugation by patriarchal ideology but also against women’s patriarchal attitude towards women who often ventilate sexist language- the product of masculine tutelage towards women. This paper is to find out why they use such opinionated language at women rather than practicing its fair use. Even their assisting utterance also becomes sympathetic and sexist. It is usually masked under the veil of support and sympathy. Chopin’s assumption of the use of gendered language can be seen in Mrs. Josephine upon Mrs. Mallard of this story. This paper will mainly be based on textual reading, feminist interpretation, and library consultation.
