Resistance to Assert the Identity in the Tutor of History

Abstract

This paper studies Manjushree Thapa's novel The Tutor of History from the perspective of identity. It answers the major question of how the women characters in the novel demonstrate their resistance to assert their identity in their community. Based on the concept of identity, this paper makes a general survey of what constitutes identity and then applies this concept to analyze the novel. The analysis adheres to the critical and interpretative method of qualitative approach, a methodology relevant in English studies. It relies upon the book itself for data and draws upon relevant theorists. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the novelist raises the issue of women subordination in Nepali society and calls upon women to articulate their suppressed voice through The Tutor of History.
