Settlement Pattern in The Peripherical Areas of Bhaktapur City

Abstract

This study explores settlement patterns in the peripheral areas of Bhaktapur city, with detail study on three sites: Nagaancha, Degamana, and Byasi focusing on the street layouts – reflecting varying historical and social influences, significance of open spaces – as vital hubs for social interaction and community gatherings and analysis of dwelling types – illustrating the influence of historical designs on contemporary living conditions. Although many new buildings diverge from traditional styles, elements of the past remain, as evident in artistic window designs and courtyard arrangements. This research eventually highlights that settlement patterns of peripheral areas reflect the living histories, cultural identities, and social dynamics of the communities in Bhaktapur city. The findings develop wider conversations on urban development and conservation, promoting an urban planning strategy that honors historical contexts while responding to the changing needs of the community in the face of ongoing urbanization.
