Abstract

Ten common wheat varieties of Nepal, viz. Nepal-297, Kalyansona, Lerma Rojo-64, RR-21, BL-1022, BL-1473, Annapurna-1, Bhrikuti, UP-262 and Annapurna-4 were screened under laboratory conditions against aflotoxin production by a toxigenic strain of Aspergillus flavus. None of these varieties was totally immune to aflatoxin production in the present investigation. These varieties, however, facilitated aflatoxin B1 production in the range of 57 to 824 μg/kg and aflatoxin B2 in the range of 10 to 293 μg/kg. Variety Lerma Rojo-64 was the least susceptible, while variety Nepal-297 was the most susceptible to A. flavus infestation and aflatoxin elaboration.
