This obituary paper is about Professor Gregory G. Maskarinec (May 16, 1951-June 16, 2022), a true friend, an academic intellectual and an honest researcher of medical anthropology. Working with him and sharing ideas with open mind was a great opportunity for me and many scholars in Nepal. Based on collaborative work, interaction and the interview with Professor Gregory, in his remembrance, I have highlighted his academic background and work experiences, friendship and collaborative work, my privilege and opportunities to write about him for his professorship and some of the dreams that could not happen due to his sudden demise. My deepest sympathies are with his family.
Madhusudan Subedi Copyright (c) 2023 Professor Madhusudan Subedi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://www.nepjol.info/index.php/DSAJ/article/view/55714 Tue, 13 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0000 In Memory of Professor Gregory G. Maskarinec: Dhaulagiri Journal, and Me https://www.nepjol.info/index.php/DSAJ/article/view/55718
This paper focuses on my perception and memories of Professor Gregory Maskarinec, who passed away on June 16, 2022, at 71. Professor Maskarinec was a member of the International Advisory Board of the Dhaulagiri Journal of Sociology and Anthropology. He was also an author, reviewer, and financial endower. This paper discusses how Professor Maskarinec contributed to promoting journal publication and knowledge dissemination in the field of social sciences in Nepal. The paper aims to highlight the author's perception of devotion to the production and sharing of knowledge, encouragement and promotion to young scholars, and generosity for knowledge production and sharing. Despite limited interactions, I observed some crucial points that I could highlight about his nature and worldview. The information presented here is from my observation, exchanged emails, interviews, papers, field notes, and contributions to the Dhaulagiri Journal of Sociology and Anthropology. Professor Maskarinec has shown big lessons and a path for social sciences research scholars. He taught us the importance of having contact with the research subjects. I admire the simplicity of his life and his harmonious relationship with people of different social, cultural, linguistic, and religious identities. These behaviors are based on the cultural relativism that Professor Maskarinec possessed. I strongly felt that Professor Maskarinec was observing his death closely. As he noticed he was dying soon from cancer, he focused his valuable time on the most important spiritual actions. Maskarinec was familiar with Nepali customs and rituals that can be performed before and after the final departure of life. In my understanding, a financial endowment he provided to the Dhaulagiri Journal was a part of the ritual of dan (donation). He had also requested his close friend to perform rituals at Pasupati temple in Nepal. The conclusion is that we must follow a scholarly path, which is deeply engaged with the topics and subjects and respectfully committed to knowledge sharing.
Man Bahadur Khattri Copyright (c) 2023 Dr. Man Bahadur Khhattri https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://www.nepjol.info/index.php/DSAJ/article/view/55718 Tue, 13 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0000 Can Biomedicine be Considered as an Alternative Healing? Engaging with the Ideas of Gregory Maskarinec https://www.nepjol.info/index.php/DSAJ/article/view/55719
In constant interactions with the select contributions of late Gregory Masakarinec, this paper analyzes the practices of shamanism as he had portrayed, mainly through his writings. While engaging with his ideas and portrayal, I will relentlessly engage with other relevant literature from different genre of medical anthropology which have dealt with health, illness and healing practices. Questioning the hegemonic presence of biomedicine in the field of health care, this article shows that even biomedicine can be considered as an alternative healing practice in typical social and cultural context of healing.
Kapil Babu Dahal Copyright (c) 2023 Dr. Kapil Babu Dahal https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://www.nepjol.info/index.php/DSAJ/article/view/55719 Tue, 13 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0000 Mesmerized by Mantra: Gregory Maskarinec and Nepali Shaman Oral Text https://www.nepjol.info/index.php/DSAJ/article/view/55720
A cursory review of the literature shows that shamanism as traditional healing has been a subject of scholarly interest. Many foreign scholars have studied the Nepali shamans and their healing practices. Professor Gregory G. Maskarinec is known for his in-depth ethnographic study of the oral texts of Nepali shamans. He explored the shamanic world, particularly the meaning of mantras shamans use to diagnose and treat affliction, and published books on Nepalese Shaman Oral Texts. He was honored by Birendra Pragyalankar, a prestigious award given to foreign scholars for their scholarly contributions. Maskarinec, a professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Hawaii, passed away from cancer on June 16, 2022, at 71. He is no longer with us but will be remembered for his contributions. This paper examines the relevance of traditional healing in light of Professor Maskarinec's work on Nepali shamans.
Bamdev Subedi Copyright (c) 2023 Dr. Bamdev Subedi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://www.nepjol.info/index.php/DSAJ/article/view/55720 Tue, 13 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0000 My Bosom Friend Gregory G.
